Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay grew up with her aunt Denise She encouraged DuVernay to develop her creativity and was drawn by art. The aunt was on the night shift in the role of a nurse so that she could indulge her passion of theater and literature throughout the day. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting social activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was raised with her family in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home that her father owned. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the close-by town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was able to use the summers they spent there to help in her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay began producing to broadcast journalism while she was still in the college. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the home and looking through the garbage of one of jurors. She was disappointed by her journalism tasks and decided to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant for a film studio that was small following her graduation from the college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Aside from PR, her agency also established a range of promotions and lifestyle networks like those like the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
